VW has filed a patent with the European Patent Office for a quick-access storage compartment located under a car’s hood. Unlike traditional front trunks or ‘frunks’ that require lifting the entire hood, this design features a dedicated flap for easy access. While VW hasn’t specified the vehicle type, it’s likely intended for an EV with under-hood storage instead of a front-mounted engine.
Hidden Storage Hatch for Quick Access
VW is applying the same push-to-release mechanism used on its fuel flaps to a new hood storage compartment. The lid remains flush with the body, popping open with a simple push with no unsightly handle needed. If locked, it stays securely in place, even when pressed.

While many EVs feature full-size frunks, for accessing under-hood storage space in the absence of a combustion engine, VW’s patent suggests a more convenient quick-access hatch. It’s a versatile design and can be used as a storage compartment for small items or for reaching essential components like fuses or electronics without lifting the entire hood.
Convenient, Secure, and Versatile Storage
VW’s quick-access hood compartment offers a range of practical uses—from storing a charging cable or small groceries to keeping wet clothes in a ventilated space with a drainage hole. It could even serve as a discreet spot to stash personal items, like your phone, while at the beach.
Unlike a full hood release, this compartment provides effortless access with a simple push while remaining lockable for added security. It’s a smart, functional addition that enhances everyday convenience.
