No Keys, No Codes: Unlock Your Car With The Power Of Smell

In a twist on biometric identification, FCA says its electronic nose is a more accurate way to identify drivers.

As vehicles become more connected, seamless driver authentication is becoming a priority for accessing key features. Automakers are constantly refining identification methods, and FCA’s latest patent filing with the European Patent Office takes an unexpected approach—an electronic nose that recognizes drivers by their unique scent.

A New Approach to Driver Authentication

Whereas existing methods may include a passcode, facial, or fingerprint authentication, FCA’s olfactory driver authentication is new to the car world. Olfactory sensors are essentially an electronic nose that can detect unique volatile chemical signatures that naturally come off of people, and are as unique as fingerprints.

These sensors would be positioned near the driver, such as around the steering wheel, and register a driver by storing their unique scent profile. Once stored, the system can detect and verify the driver’s presence based on their scent signature.

Biometric Security, Reinvented

Keeping personal information secure and restricting vehicle features are important in today’s world of high-tech crimel. FCA’s latest patent takes inspiration from the animal kingdom and adopts a technique our canine companions have been using all along – identifying friend and foe by smell.

This electronic nose seamlessly authenticates drivers based on their unique odor, granting them access to essential vehicle functions. Your odor is as unique to you as your iris or fingerprints, and FCA says this will be all that’s needed to successfully authenticate an authorized driver.

Effortless, Foolproof Security

FCA’s olfactory authentication system offers unique advantages over traditional methods:

  •  As unique as a fingerprint
  •  Works passively—no driver action required
  •  Unaffected by masks or sunglasses, unlike facial recognition
  •  No passcodes to remember

If the system turns out to be reliable and affordable, your car might soon sniff you like Rex or Fido before giving you the nod of approval.
