Porsche’s Smart Headlights Show You The Fastest Way Around A Track

Special high-res LED headlights project the correct racing line onto the road to improve your cornering precision.

Porsche’s latest patent, filed with the European Patent Office, aims to make you a better race-car driver by projecting the ideal racing line onto the road for you to follow using specially designed LED headlights. This approach is simpler than Ferrari’s recent patent, which proposed using multiple vehicle cameras to record track footage for post-session analysis. Instead of reviewing past laps, Porsche’s system provides real-time guidance, helping drivers perfect their lines as they drive.

Porsche Wants To Make You A Faster Driver

The best lap times require efficient driving and following the optimal racing lines through corners, so you don’t bleed off too much speed. To achieve this, drivers spend countless laps with instructors until following the optimal racing line becomes second nature. Now, Porsche wants to speed up the learning process using special high-resolution LED headlights that project the ideal racing line directly onto the road, giving drivers real-time visual guidance.

How Porsche’s Racing Line Projection System Works

Porsche’s patent goes beyond simply displaying an ideal racing line. The system dynamically calculates the best path using key data inputs, including:

  • GPS coordinates to track vehicle position
  • Steering angle for real-time adjustments
  • Vehicle speed to optimize entry and exit points
  • Preloaded track maps for accurate guidance

Beyond projection, the system enhances driver feedback with visual cues, likely through a head-up display (HUD), indicating ideal braking points and target speeds for different track sections. Porsche also suggests the technology could extend beyond racing, improving road safety by supplementing driver-assistance systems.

The Big Question

Porsche’s patent is certainly intriguing, but it’s not clear how well the projection system will work in the daytime and in direct, bright sunlight – the typical conditions for racers. The LEDs would have to be extraordinarily bright and precisely focused to be clearly visible under all conditions, and there might be a limit to how far ahead the light will still be clearly visible on the road surface. These challenges will determine whether Porsche’s innovation is a game-changer or just an interesting idea on paper.
