Stellantis Wants To Turn Eggshells into Fuel-Saving Tires

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), now part of Stellantis since 2019, has filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for an innovative use of calcium oxide derived from eggshells in automotive tires. This material serves as both a filler and coupling agent, offering notable benefits such as improved rolling resistance and enhanced grip in wet conditions. Additionally, it presents a more sustainable alternative to traditional tire materials, aligning with the push for environmentally friendly automotive solutions.

From Eggshells to Tires: A Sustainable Shift in Materials

Carbon black, a paracrystalline carbon with a high surface-area-to-volume ratio, is widely used in tire construction as a reinforcing filler and colorant. Beyond tires, it also serves as an ink pigment and, in some countries, a food colorant when derived from vegetable matter. However, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is exploring a more sustainable alternative.

In its recent patent application, FCA proposes replacing some or all of the carbon black and silica traditionally used in tire manufacturing with calcium oxide derived from eggshells. While the company has not detailed the bio-waste processing steps to extract and refine the calcium oxide, the move signals a push toward reducing reliance on conventional materials in favor of eco-friendly innovations.

  • Color Concerns: Will the traditional black appearance of tires be retained by including some carbon black, or will alternative dyes be introduced? The market strongly prefers black tires, except in niche markets like drifting.
  • Processing Steps: The company has not revealed how the calcium oxide will be extracted from eggshells or processed for tire manufacturing.

Despite these unanswered questions, FCA’s innovation presents a promising solution that improves both tires’ performance and their green credentials.
