Mercedes-Benz has filed trademarks for the names S700, S800, and S900, signaling the German marque is preparing to push its flagship S-Class lineup even further into the stratosphere.
Representing the pinnacle of the automaker’s luxury and performance models, the S-Class range is currently headed by the Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance, which combines a potent V8 with electrification delivering over 800 horsepower, and the Mercedes-Maybach S680 that features a V12 engine and a bespoke interior that’s arguably the best in the business.
New High-Performance Vision
The S700, S800, and S900 trademark registrations raise questions about the direction Mercedes-Benz plans to take.
Mercedes-AMG could use these new badges for new ultra-high-performance S-Class models. The S700 could arrive as a more powerful iteration of the S63, possibly with an uprated hybrid powertrain exceeding 900 horsepower. While the S800/S900 could represent entirely new AMG models or limited-edition hyper-luxury vehicles, this seems unlikely.
Redefining Luxury and Electrification
With the EQS already serving as Mercedes-Benz’s electric counterpart to the S-Class, these trademarks might hint at a shift towards electrification. The S700, S800, and S900 could introduce ultra-luxury electric sedans under the S-Class banner, leveraging lessons from the Vision EQXX concept, which demonstrated over 600 miles of range in testing.
Mercedes-Maybach could use the S800 or S900 badges for elevated versions of the S-Class, featuring exclusive materials and unprecedented customization options akin to the Project Maybach. A Maybach S900 could rival the Rolls-Royce Phantom in terms of luxury and personalization, particularly if Mercedes chooses to revisit the Pullman stretch limo.
Reshaping Model Hierarchy
These trademarks might also signal a shift in Mercedes-Benz’s model hierarchy. By introducing larger numerical designations, the company could differentiate between standard S-Class models and those offering additional performance, luxury, or electrification advancements.
The exact purpose of the S700, S800, and S900 trademarks remains speculative. Whether they denote high-performance hybrids, luxurious electric sedans, or ultra-opulent Maybachs, they almost certainly signal the brand’s next steps in redefining automotive excellence.
