Out here, in Los Angeles, it appears that kia has beat other brands to the multiple electric vehicle party by giving us not just the Seoul Electric, but also this all-new enero, the electric version of their already efficient, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicle.
The Niro EV has a battery capacity, that is over 60 kilowatt hours. That is pretty big as far as smaller EVs like this go, and that should give this over 230 miles of electric only range and we have an awful lot more power under the hood than we find in other Niro models. So this is likely going to be not just one of the more efficient but also the fastest version of the Niro. We have just over 200 horsepower under the hood and nearly 300 pound feet of torque.
But aside from that, the e Niro looks exactly like the Niro that you’re already used to up front. The only real change. Is this charge door right here and the replacement of the grill with this sort of diamond crossed flat section up front? That’s because we don’t have the same kind of cooling demands in an electric vehicle, as you have in a plug-in, hybrid or hybrid vehicle.
We then have a radar sensor down there at the bottom, because we do have all of Kia’s latest active safety systems in this vehicle and then a fairly traditional looking headlamp set up right there with turn signals down lower with Kia’s first generation electric vehicle, the SOL Evey they supported the Chatham o charging standard, which is what Nissan uses in the leaf, but with the new version of their V’s, the E and Aero and, of course, the new Sol evey. We actually find the newer standard, which is the sae combo connector. So we have the j1 772 charging connector on top and then the DC fast charge in down below at the moment. This is not necessarily the most common charging standard in the US, but this is the one that is supported by the most auto manufacturers.
The interior is basically the same as the rest of the Niro lineup. We have basically the same sort of interior, fit and finished same sort of interior trappings and basically the same style on the dashboard. We have some little green accents right there on the air vents, which sort of actually a greenish blue right there, basically the same infotainment system. This is not the more modern one that we see in the new sole, because, of course, this is based off of the existing niro beneath the LCD.
We have some infotainment buttons, a single zone, climate control system, not dual zone climate control. Wireless charging that in this particular model USB input for that media system and then a slightly different shifter than the rest of the Nero lineup. It’s a rotary style shifter. We have parked right there in the middle.
We still find heated and ventilated seats, because that is actually an energy saving thing to do in an electric vehicle drive mode button and then two large cup holders right there behind that roller door. The instrument cluster is similar to the other Nero models, but it’s obviously more easy focus. They has a digital speedometer over there on the right side and then over here. On this side, we have our power and charge gates right there inside the LCD kind of an interesting move.
We don’t have an empty and full gauge. We have sort of a high and low gauge for the battery right over here on the left and then a digital readout for the actual range. So, even though this battery has only 50 %, you can see that the range is about a hundred fifty miles. One big surprise here in the eNiro is that if we lift the cargo air load floor, we don’t find a spare tire.
I lift all that out. You’ll find that we just have a little foam cargo divider down there, but a temporary spare tire would actually fit here and we still have the retention mechanism. So if you wanted to get a temporary spare from the cab Euler and insert it yourself aftermarket, that’s definitely something that you could do, because the battery is completely under the floor of the Nero. If you want to get your hands on one of Kia’s new electric vehicles, the e Nero is going to be the first one that you’ll be able to get.
We expect this early in 2019. If you want the sole Evie, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer. That’s probably going to be the second half of 2019, so possibly the late summer or early fall of 2019 calendar year. I’m actually a little bit surprised that Kia has released two vehicles that are relatively similar.
We have basically the same motor same battery pack under the vehicle very similar range and interior space. That is not necessarily that different in terms of overall size. The Nero is definitely larger on the outside, but as far as interior dimensions go, the sole is actually fairly competitive. Now we do a little bit more passenger room inside the passenger seats are a little bit more comfortable, especially the back seat, and the cargo area is pretty generous right back here in the eNiro, but the new sole has a slightly larger cargo area in this version.
The eNiro actually comes in kind of an odd little entry in this segment. We don’t know exactly what the price point will be, but I suspect that if I were shopping between these two, I would probably get the new so levy.
