Without a doubt, the all-new 2020 Jeep gladiator pickup truck was the biggest news at the LA Auto Show this week, and it was also probably the worst kept secret.
Basically, the gladiator is exactly what you’re thinking that it is. It’s a jeep wrangler, unlimited that they have poked and prodded and turned into a pickup truck bottom line. Is that if you love the wrangler, you’re, probably going to love the gladiator? But if you didn’t care for the Wranglers interior or the way that the wrangler drove you’re, probably not going to like the gladiator either what’s most interesting about the gladiator, is that jeep took an off-road, capable vehicle.
The wrangler was designed for dedicated off-road duty and then they turned it into a pickup truck. They didn’t take a pickup truck and try to make it into an off-road vehicle like we see with the Ford, Raptor or certain versions of the Chevy Colorado. That’s a pretty important difference, because everything about the Wrangler really is dedicated for off-road ability, and even though I think that the gladiator is likely going to be less capable than the Wrangler, it is probably by far going to be the best rock crawling pickup truck. You can buy under the hood.
We find the 3.6 liter v6 engine out of the wrangler. It produces 285 horsepower at 260 pound feet of torque, it’s mated to either an 8-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission, which is another interesting twist in an American pickup truck here. We’re told that we will get a 3 liter Ecotec engine at some point, probably in 2020, and we now know what that engines gon na be rated for 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. That’s a little bit of a bump over the last eco diesel that Jeep used, there are two different four-wheel drive systems available in the Wrangler, one will have a 2.7 two-two-one crawl ratio and the other one will have a four-to-one crawl ratio.
We also have true locking front and rear differentials, which is really something you don’t find in pickup trucks normally, obviously, skid plates are on offer front and rear tow hooks heavy duty, bumpers, the ability from the factory to have a winch ready bumper with removable end caps. That’s pretty unique too you’re, not gon na find that, on a Ford, f150 33 inch tires are available, depending on the trim that you get and, depending on the trim you get you’ll be able to forward up to 30 inches of water. The tow rating comes in a little bit higher than I had expected at seven thousand six hundred fifty pounds and payload is actually a lot higher than I thought it would be at 1600 pounds. That’s nearly what we see in some Ram 1500 models until we can drive, the gladiator is not too much else to say other than this is exactly the Wrangler pickup truck you’ve been looking for, and I’m really impressed with the fact that Jeep didn’t decide to de Wrangler Fi it when trying to make it a pickup truck, the hardtop comes off the doors, come off the windshield, folds down, etc.
So if you want to drive around in a pickup truck with no windshield no doors and no top, this is the only option in America and of course, if you do want to put a top on your gladiator pickup truck, then it actually strikes me from the Rear as kind of looking like a Mercedes G wagon, pickup truck and away, which is not necessarily a bad look, the only downside that I can see is that the bed is definitely on the small side. That is one of the side effects of the gladiators overall size and, of course, the way that this became a pickup trucks. If you need a bigger bed, Ram would love to sell you around 1500, but if you just need to stuff a few dirt bikes in the back, this will serve you just fine, although personally, I would rather drive the gladiator honestly than the average dirt bike. Let me know what you think about all that down there in the comments section below and, of course, stay tuned, because hopefully we will be able to drive one of these very soon.
